Studio Life in Italy

It’s the little things that remind me that I am here in Italy. I feel so much gratitude everyday that I roll up those metal doors and get back to work in my studio. And I’ll never get over all the marble that surrounds me! From my old kitchen sink to the curbs along these streets, and my view of the Alpi Apuane in the near distance where it all comes from.

A New Work in Progress in the Studio

I just finished the build on a new piece! This sculpture is based on a sketch I made the day I got the keys to my new studio by the sea. Each of my clay sculptures are hollow-built from the bottom up. This one was a good challenge due to its large size and wide leg stance. The clay is heavy and I’m asking it to do strange things against gravity. Now its time to let her dry.

Going to Auction!

La Donna Forte arrived at the New York Academy of Art where she will be on view and auctioned off at the annual “Artists for Artists” event (formerly known as Take Home a Nude) supporting scholarships and programs at the New York Academy of Art. On view at the Academy from October 1st through the 26th the bidding starts on Oct 6th on Artsy.net

It was a long journey to arrive to this gallery. Born from an incredible block of Carrara Statuario marble and carved by hand with a view of the Apuane Mountains at Studio Corsanini in Carrara Avenza, Italy, Kelly roughed out the sculpture for four weeks while on residency sponsored by ABC Stone and the New York Academy of Art. The marble was then crated up and shipped across the Atlantic arriving in Long Island, New York, where Kelly completed the sculpture at the North American Sculpture Center.

But look at the company she has the honor of keeping! In the front gallery of the Academy, La Donna Forte is positioned as though she’s on guard to protect the works of Kiki Smith, Shepard Fairey, Hunt Slonem and Scott Avett among several exquisite academy alumni.

Carving Marble at Precision Stone

Getting to the finishing stages of my Carrara marble sculpture started last summer in Italy with the Merit Award Residency. I am grateful to work on her here at Precision Stone in Westbury, Long Island. When she’s finished she will go on auction at NYAA’s annual Take Home a Nude charity event in October, 2020. Thank you Levin Productions for spending the afternoon with me to make this rad video!

Copying at the Met

I had the amazing opportunity last fall to study and sculpt in the Greek and Roman Sculpture Gallery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. With their copyist program, an artist can utilize the museum in the way many museums were first intended for. Thank you to Levin Productions for capturing one of my days at the Met.

Pouring Bronze

When I was an undergraduate student at RISD I had the unforgettable opportunity to run the weekly bronze pours in the foundry. This job was my everything in those days. So grateful. These photos were taken in 1999.
