Human resiliency and frailty are camouflaged in the rhythm of routine. Hidden behind growth and gradual change, it is easy to assume we have an endless replenishment of physical and emotional fuel. So we are “shocked to the core” when confronted with an occurrence that pummels our routine and demands instantaneous reaction.
I imagine that in the instant our primary source of energy is cut off, another one is born. Like a flash of lightning, we make an undoubtable and immediate shift. Positive or negative, major change bestows a major impact on our bodies and our spirits. So major, that it can tempt the strongest to let go. Like the moment in a novel when the humble protagonist is called to do an unfathomable task. The first reaction is often, “but I can’t do this.” Then something happens. We maybe frail, but we are also resilient. Our ability to jump into action as a preservation of life is a beautiful sign that we are adaptable and desire hope.
I present in my work, moments of intense illumination as physical gestures. Spotlighting the core of the human body as a pure source of energy actively winding itself in order to generate light from darkness, and conjuring the strength to regard and honor these junctures, elevating the spirit and resupplying hope.
Described through the swellings and tensions of form, these figures fuse the feminine and the masculine, unite confidence and question, recognize sensuality and isolation, and replace the ideal with the essential. I pose a stance with the ingredients of a hero. Exposure, armor, enlightenment, love, abandon and force. Ingredients that are intimately identifiable because we all inevitably stand with them in our own defining moments.
